Iki Island, 4 days Beach Holiday
Iki Island is situated off the coast of Kyushu between Fukuoka and South Korea. It’s a subtropical island with some magnificent nature, white sand beaches and soothing natural hot springs (onsens). The island offers some good snorkelling and diving in the surrounding coral reefs. The chilled-out lifestyle, the friendly island inhabitants and the beautiful surroundings make a visit to Iki Island into an unforgettable experience.
This ‘4 days Iki Island Japan’ is an add-on tour to one of our Japan sample itineraries or any other tailor-made tour. It is not possible to book these add-on tours separately.
Day 1 Fukuoka – Iki Island , explore Iki Island by bicycle.
The easiest way to access Iki Island is actually from Fukuoka by a 2 hour journey by ferry. The island is very small (140 km circumference), so it is easy to travel around by (electric) bicycle or scooter. Besides some beautiful nature and cultural sights, you can visit the Harunotsuji Park. This park reproduces the world of Ikikoku, the land of the East, as Japan was referred to in Chinese historical texts. After a full day’s cycling, enjoy Iki’s other speciality: Iki Beef.
Day 2 Iki Island – White sand beaches and an uninhabited island.
Iki’s white sand beaches are great to just relax and unwind or practice water sports. Ohama Beach and Koyoshima Beach are popular with surfers, but also with other water sports such as diving and snorkelling. The white sand Tsutsukihama Beach about 600 meter long with shallow water and calm waves, is popular with families with kids. In summer the beach is lined by street stalls, bars and barbecue tents.
Tatsunoshima, also known as Dragon Island, is an uninhabited islands near Iki Island and only reachable by small ferry. The island’s beach with its fine white sand and calm crystal-clear waters is the perfect place to relax.
Day 3 Iki Island – Temples and monkey rock
Iki Island is noted not only for its great beaches and history, but also its spiritual presence. The island has 150 registered Shinto shrines. The most famous one is the Ondake temple, where you will be greeted by 230 stone monkey statues, placed for prayer and luck. The path towards the temple’s entrance is lined by red torii. Don’t miss the Monkey Rock, along the western edge of the island; the rock’s formation looks like a sitting monkey. For panoramic shots of Iki’s lush landscape, you can hike or drive up to the nearby hill. The Ikinokura Sake brewery offers guided tours, which happily include tastings at the end.
